Entertainment Weekly Reviews Planetary

(From Entertainment Weekly, March 24, 2000)

PLANETARY:
Warren Ellis and John Cassaday (WildStorm, $2.50)

Our world has a strange and strangely suppressed history, of gods and monsters, pulp heroes and interstellar villains. Now that secret history is being brought to light by a trio of kick-ass archaeologists, with superpowers and awful secrets of their own. Ellis (a 1999 EW It Lister for Transmetropolitan) lets his mythic mystery unspool slowly, with individual stories encoded with sharp genre satire and a transcendent, prescient Big Point: Strip the nostalgic goo off the 20th century, folks, it's time for some sober reassessment. Kudos, too, for Cassaday's crisp, cinematic layouts and irresistible covers. Call it The X-Files in tights--but also call Planetary provocative, eminently addictive, and top of its class.
